Gynecologic Cancer Awareness

Gynecologic Cancer Awareness
September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month!

GYN cancers include:
  • Cervical Cancer. This cancer starts in the cervix and is the most common gynecologic cancer. It tends to occur in women over the age of 40.
  • Ovarian Cancer. This cancer starts in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs that make eggs. Symptoms are not always clear.
  • Uterine Cancer. Since there are different types of tissues in the uterus, there are different types of uterine cancers. The most common is endometrial cancer. Normally, uterine cancer occurs in women after menopause. The most common symptom is abnormal bleeding.
  • Vulvar Cancer. This type of cancer is rare and only represents nearly 5% of GYN cancers. It’s normally found as a lesion on the vulva, which is the external female genitalia.
  • Vaginal Cancer. This type of cancer is also rare, but has a high survival rate. The HPV vaccine can help lower your risk of vaginal cancer.

Every year, more than 89,000 women are diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer and this number doesn’t even include breast cancer diagnosis. Sadly, over 29,000 women will die from these types of cancer yearly.

What can you do to prevent Gynecologic Cancer?

Prevention may not always be possible, but there are certain things you can do to lower your risk including:
  • Maintaining a health diet, weight and lifestyle
  • Getting the HPV vaccine
  • Testing for hereditary genetic mutations

The key to early detection and treatment of GYN cancers is a routine pelvic screening.
